So, this one time my friends and I went to a business conference. I came back frustrated because I couldn’t identify with some of the speakers. The conference was incredibly well-organized, but failed to meet me (a thirty year old, prematurely balding African male) where I was. I had just started a cosmetics business that was still in its development phase, dealing with a lack of direction but being forced to figure things out. I came to realize that the task of running a business is a journey, and moreover, a very personal one. Entrepreneurship is a journey that reveals your innermost being. We make the erred judgment that it is solely about increasing profit margins, and while that may be part of it: success is key - success by our own definition.
What I felt after that conference left me wondering whether I was alone in my frustration. The words 'entrepreneurship,' 'business,' and the concept of self-employment are so easily thrown around today, one cannot be shocked to hear an Instagram model use these as regular verbatim. In hopes that I was not alone, and wanting to open a space for like-minded young, up and coming business men and women - I decided to start IKHONOMIX.
Ikhono is the isiZulu word for ‘ability,’ and ‘mix’ an English word for associating with others socially, or the act of combining things to form one mass, or thing. Many people approach business as a means to an end: making money; forgetting the need to understand themselves, applying business strategies that work best in line with their identities. Our goal is to teach them that money is the by-product of a compelling vision, and an efficiently run business that is ultimately people centered, helping to extend African entrepreneurs as part of the solution to this continent’s problems.
Our team is a made up individuals who are pursuing their interests. We have similar goals but different dreams. We are also on our grind. We fail, we learn, we succeed. We want to join you on your journey to success.
